60GB of Backup stored on Macintosh HD?

Specs: Macintosh , 4GB
I found that Mac has 145GB used which I thought was weird since I got my mac less than a month ago. I checked into "about my mac" and 'storage' and found that I have 60GB(!) used up in backups. I would much rather not waste 60GB in backups on my main Macintosh HD, especially since I have a Time Machine running to an external HD. Does anyone know how to get rid of this unwanted data to free up space on my HD? Thanks in advance!
