Want to try Xubuntu

Specs: Windows xp, old- 1998 hp laptop
I gave my mom-( she's 73 & loves her 1st computer) my old laptop that has windows xp on it. She really only wants to store a few photos, play some games, and get online. I hate internet explorer, and put google chrome on it instead,( could not remove IE) and also AVG. It is very slow, and I was doing some research, I want to know if I can put Xubuntu on, and get rid of the AVG, and Windows xp. I can go to different sites to find out step by step how to do it, but would love your advice if this is a good way to go. None of the Mircosoft "fixes" for a slow computer were of any help--- disk cleanup, removing startup items, defrag, etc. Any info would be welcome-- Debbie

Your system is slow because it's 12 yrs old. More than likely you have a very weak CPU & no where near enough RAM. You probably shouldn't have put XP on it in the 1st place. If you want to experiment with Linux, try either Damn Small or Puppy.

I agee with Jam, Puppy Linux is ideal, Version 4 would be a good choice.

Any older version of Windows, even Windows 2000, is past its prime...

HI I would just try the xubuntu live cd and see what it does, just remember that it will be slower on a cd, if you don't have a cd and it will boot from a usb drive you can try using unetbootin which will let the iso install on the usb drive. Good luck.

The old computer had windows xp already installed on it. It has an Intel Celeron M, 1.30 ghz processor, 1.30ghz, 224mb of ram. It only shows that it has used 13.3bg of 55.8gb of the hard drive ( about 1/4 used). But I'd love to get rid of windows, avg, malwarebytes, constant update reminders, etc. I think the Puppy 4 will work great- Thank you guys alot for the info. Wish me good luck.--By the way- I still have the windows installation cd, so if I really mess things up- I think I can re-install xp.

There are a few choices for that computer..Most issues would be lack of ram. I think Ma would be able to understand simple firefox or chrome on a linux distro maybe.

Vector, Puppy, DSL, Austrumi, Slitaz, xubuntu maybe, and a few other lightweight distros may work. I forget the other one they usually suggest. See distrowatch.com.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

...are you sure it is 1998 ?? " Intel Celeron M, 1.30 ghz processor"

It may be feasible to upgrade the memory for better performance !
