Solved Ubuntu won't boot, it loads GRUB on startup please help!

Specs: Ubuntu
I have Ubuntu 11.10 running alongside XP, and it usually boots quickly. I tried to run it today, and it would not boot. When I ran recovery mode, it froze. Finally I started it again, and it started GRUB instead of Ubuntu. Do you have any ideas on why it is doing this? Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Data issue with hard drive I suspect. Run hard drive diags maybe, memtest. boot to live cd and see if you can run file check.
