Ubuntu Tweak / Software Center issues

Specs: Xubuntu 10.04, Dimension 8300 1.5 GB
I have a Dell Dimension 8300, 1.5 GB RAM, running Xubuntu 10.04. Standard installation, no problems installing the OS.
However, Ubuntu Software Center (which came installed by default) and Ubuntu Tweak (which I installed through the terminal using apt-get because of problems with the Ubuntu Software Center that I will describe momentarily) don't work. They launch, but when I try to actually install software or tweak options, nothing happens. No errors, no feedback, nothing.
When I run either program from the terminal using sudo software-center or sudo ubuntu-tweak, they work correctly.
I may be mistaken, but this strikes me as a permissions issue.
Not being particularly proficient with Xubuntu specifically or Linux in general, I am not sure at this point how to proceed. I have googled the issue and found that other X/Ubuntu users have experienced this problem. However, as of this point, I haven't been able to find a fix.
Thanks to anyone who cares to help.

Why aren't you running 10.10?

Anyway, kind of hard to tell. Yes it ought to have a popup window for authentication at some time. Can't say if your install is correct or the original cd is correct. Can't tell if any changes you made could have caused it.

If you can't find thousands of posts on this topic by other users then the problem is on your side.

Just get the latest and do a clean install and check the disk at boot time. Then use the package manager to add in software. Any other sources not standard can cause all sorts of problems.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
