I am trying to install Ubuntu on a new hard drive in my compaq presario 700. I load the live cd in the cd drive turn on the computer and all I get is LI and it stays there.
Please help. Thanks

Hmm. I believe this error message means that LILO can't get the correct geometry for the disk. Two strange things here - 1. I've never heard of that happening on a CD, and 2. I thought all modern distributions used GRUB on their Live CDs, not LILO. What version of Ubuntu are you trying to install? In any case, it may be worth burning a new CD as your current one may be bad.

I believe the cd is good. I used it on another laptop that already has windows xp on it. It booted from the cd and I was able to get on the intenet. But when I tried to install ubuntu on the compaq, which has a new hard drive with no OS on it yet. I get the "LI" that is all it does.

Thanks

The cd should not use lilo so I am not sure it is that.

The issue is more of this computer. We'd need to know exact specs.

Issues are the cd-drive can't read burned cd-r disc's easily. Burn at very slowest speeds. Try black cd-r or high quality cd-r.

Or, the specs on the system are not for that disk. Either cpu is wrong or too little ram or such.

Or, the disk may be bad too. Just because it boots on another machine doesn't fully prove this is good but it is a helpful indication that you have something partly working.

"The cd should not use lilo so I am not sure it is that."

I guess that depends upon how old the CD is. The OP didn't answer my question about which version it was. It had better be an old on on a PC that limited. Something like Puppy Linux would be a better choice.

The "LI" then hang error is a classic LILO problem. So if it's not the CD then the hard disk already has a Linux installation and is trying, but failing, to boot from it rather than the CD.

OK, I'll agree that we are both trying to assist as best we can. Your help is appreciated by me and hopefully the OP will respond so we both might know.

You may be exactly correct.
