total file size w/o listing all files

What command do I use to just show me 'total' file size w/o showing all the files? thank you

ok I found the command du -sh

this will give me the summary total file size w/o running thru all the files.

Thanks. I tend to use df but that is me.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Also a more accurate tally can be had by using : cksum (file)
This is for contents of a directory ,like individual files. It is most accurate. Thanks for your input....
