my compaq presario has mepis linux on it now . i want to reset my pc to factory settings to start fresh and reinstall the same linux os

It's unlikely your computer came with Linux so resetting it to factory settings (assuming you didn't wipe out the restore partition) will reinstall the original version of Windows along with the included HP/Compaq bloatware. Is that what you want to do? Please post the exact model/model number.

Also, why MEPIS? It hasn't been updated since 2011. There are much better Linux options available. Maybe it's time for a change?

Agreed, I would search for distrowatch and choose something from the top 10 distributions. I prefer KDE so I use openSUSE, but LinuxMint and Ubuntu are solid performers.
