For some reason in the past few days the audio on my computer with Fedora 20 has not been working normally.

By that I mean that when I start it up and try to put on audio for the first time, no output from the speakers can be heard. However If I plug in my headphones and then unplug it, the speakers suddenly work.

I am not sure what could cause something like this to happen. It's as if the machine was in headphones mode until I connect actual headphones and then disconnect them.

Anyone heard of a problem of this nature before?

I assume that fedora still uses pulseaudio by default

Does your computer have a HDMI or optical sound card? It could be that it is defaulting to that first.

Try launching pulseaudio control (terminal -> pavucontrol) and check to see what audio device is selected on startup.
