OS Research: why so complicated?

Specs: Windows 7
Can someone explain to me why there are so many different Operating System philosophies out there (like the Windows vs Linux vs Mac vs Unix debates...) and why there can't just be one operating system that we could all run on? Or perhaps, it would be helpeful to know what some of the biggest problems systems researchers much face?

If it's not obvious to you why diversity and choice in software is a good thing then I doubt that anyone can explain it to you.

Why can't there be only one standard issue girl for everyone? One that cooks and cleans and does shopping for food and never wastes money and never complains and always is hot in bed and likes puppies and shotguns and knows how to cuss and work on a car and dresses in pink dresses once in a while and wears tight blue jeans and rubs your back when you hurt?

In Japan they are working on a robot girl like that. That is what I heard at least.
