Most Difficult BIOS Update in the World!

August 30, 2018 at 18:21:27
Specs: Puppy Linux, AMD athlon 4 900
I am trying to install puppy linux on a msata ssd, but I believe the BIOS is keeping me from using it (I think). I know where the file is, I can not use usb, I can not use CD (I can but that is what puppy linux is on), floppy is just not an option. There must be a way to do it, Dell does it through their Support Assist program, oh, by the way HP wants nothing to do with this computer, it is obsolete why would they do anything about it, the updated BIOS is through a third party.

Please list make/model & specs. How did you go about updating the BIOS & what did you hope to gain by doing so? Also, why Puppy of all the 100's of possibilities?

The computer is a HP Pavilion N5425 (I know it is older than crap) I am unable to format the hard drive due to it either being too big or the type is not supported. Puppy Linux because it is the only OS that can run on it other than Vista. 512MB of RAM. I also am unable to boot from usb due to the BIOS.

Puppy installed, but I can not find a browser to reach the download site, RIP. The Athlon does not support SSE2. Why must this be so difficult??

I just realized we discussed this before. Stick with XP & get a browser that doesn't require SSE2.

I can not do that, Windows XP corrupted itself. I would if I could...
And how would I download that version of Palemoon through the command line?

Just wipe the HDD & install XP. If you don't have a disc, download the ISO & create one.

Will internet explorer be compatible with it though? Since that is the only way I know of downloading palemoon on Windows.

So, it is now working on XP, now how do I update the BIOS? I know what file I need and where to get it from, but the file tries to install it onto a floppy...

Why do you want to update the BIOS? What do you expect to gain? Where did you find the BIOS file? HP no longer supports your laptop so it must have been from a 3rd party site. From what I could find, it should be version 1.14. You'd better be 100% sure it's legit. You should also find out what the new version supposedly fixes. Not point in messing with it if it's not gonna do whatever it is you're hoping for. If the flash is done incorrectly or with a bogus BIOS file, it could very well be the end of the laptop.

It is running Phoenix Technology's GE M1.02 BIOS, I want to update it to either hopefully gain booting from flash drive or make the msata ssd compatible. I have found version m1.04 on multiple third parties, hpnotebookdrivers.com being the seemingly most legit. There is not much information out there that will tell me what it fixes and does not, it is really a last resort.

"There is not much information out there that will tell me what it fixes and does not, it is really a last resort."

That right there would steer me away from the attempt. Listen to riider...a failed update can basically brick a machine.

The machine is a brick, it has an athlon 4 900mghz processor, I am trying to revive it and bring new life to it, otherwise it is worth the gold in it.
