Most of the instruction at pendrivelinux.com would work for a flash as well as a usb.

However, almost every. linux "distro" can be used to install to any bootable media. Most are simply boot to cd/dvd. Might have to know and understand how to use boot loaders in vista and linux and be sure to make a complete backup of your system. Also understand that you may have a hidden partition that you need to protect.

I would suggest that you start off with live cd's or live usb flash drives first. Then consider using a virtual machine. Then after you get a distro you like consider dual boots.
