What happens when you type startx?

Have you checked the Xorg log in /var/log to see if it identifies the problem?

I typed startx and got the Gnome Desktop with mouse, Computer icon and Home documents icon but no menus. I then used CTRL+ALT+F1 to get back to the CLI and find that startx has not finished running but text screen shows messages like "(nautilus:1686).........!=NULL' failed" and "**(de ja-dup-monitor:1616): DEBUG monitor.vala:273...." etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I opened "Xorg.0.log". There were 730 lines but it didn't mean anything to me. What should I look for?

It can be a confusing log. Do a search for "error" and see if anything shows up. Failing that, read the file from the end backwards (error messages are likely to be near the end) to see if anything stands out that indicates "failure", "unable to open screen", something like that.

I checked "Xorg.0.log" and found the following message appeared 3 times:
"drmOpenByBusid: Interface 1.4 failed, trying 1.1"

Also when I try to change runlevel with "telinit 5" I get 3 lines of text then it stops.

Thanks.
