knoppix digital input cannot display this vid

Specs: Windows Vista
trying to look into boot disk no longer detected problem on my son's Dell Studio Hybrid 140g which has only digital video. When I boot Knoppix from an external USB cdrom/dvd drive it boots up fine, recognizes all the hardware ok and then starts the Light Desktop Environment but when it switches video modes the display goes black with the message:

2: Digital Input
Cannot Display This Video Mode

Is there a way I can catch it before it launches LDE and specify a video mode that will work?
Thanks so much in advance

try Puppy Linux 5 or Ubuntu is not recognizing natively the graphics Chip!

Thanks, I assume that one or both of those can be downloaded in ISO format to make a bootable cdrom? Do you know if either one or both can mount and read/write NTFS files like Knoppix can do?

Yes both have ISO for creating LiveCD and as NTFS, if not installed can usually install thru Package Manager

Thanks to each who helped. I am very impressed with the Puppy Linux 5 which handled the graphics chip just fine. Even the latest Knoppix 6.4.4 was still unable to do that.

Boot knoppix to one of the failsafe modes.

For what you want you can simply use I think knoppix=failsafe but check it. A vesa or vga option may work better.
