Is there a rootpassword, if there is only one user in dsl?

June 13, 2012 at 02:10:34
Specs: Linux i686, pentium 3 666mhz 256 ram
Hello
I have done the normal hard drive install(grub) in damn small linux, and at reboot, i was asked to set root. At that moment my keyboard didnt work. I tapped enter a couple of times, and could continue. Later, i tryed to run a command but, it seems not to work. I can't set root nyder. Can this be due to the fact that i installed on a logical partition,or maybe to the fact that i'am in a dual boot with windows?

See More: Is there a rootpassword, if there is only one user in dsl?

Not sure you can set a blank password but dunno. DSL is an odd distro and while still useful it is not current.

See if sudo passwd or passwd to see if you can change it.

What do you mean tap a few times.

Some distro's allow you to boot into a single user mode and fix the password.

As this is not normal I'd say just reload it.

Hang up and live.

Thanks Jefro,
I can't change it. (sudo passwd)
But before reloading, i allso wanted to know if there is any chance for my machine (666mhz cpu) to have flash-player? I allready tryed fp7 but it seems not to work.
Maybe it is becous i'm not enough used to the system allready.
Thanks

You are in a DSL boat and less and less people know about it each day. I'd guess you might get some flash to work.

DSL is a one of a kind deal. Great for what it does but not so great for the latest and greatest.

I might be tempted to switch to another distro if you need flash working or post a new topic on what all you did to try to get any flash player working on this.

Hang up and live.

Thanks Jefry
What i have done to have fp7 is as follows:
1-I went to the download and downloaded it. It is a zip (fp7_archive.zip). Maybe i have to unzip it, another way, but i do'nt know how.
2-In mlfm i tryed as root (i think i just have to enter when passw is asked) to open with "tar -zxvf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz", as indicated on the dsl board forum. (this is: clicked on it, than launched the command, and when he asked my pw i entered.)
3-Then it said "no such file has found". I repeated it a couple of times, and once (i do'nt know anymore what i did aditionaly), it said that i had to make a list of something (did not understand what). I think i had to do "sudo -m"? Nothing happened.
Anyway, at this moment i'm thinking to take another distro. Debian, selfcompiled looks to me a good idea. But first i continue to try on this dsl to see what is all compatible to my old, though stable machine.
All i really need is: -a textprocessor, 100% compatible with ms office, -a superlight video-editor (just to cut and convert, and maybe some other basics), -someting like mlfm to arange files, -and an internetbrowser. As you see flash is allso welcome, to watch missed soap from tv.
You where right Jefry, i am a bit in a loveboat with dsl, i allready begin to get used to it's 80's look.
Yesterday, i discovered that he had placed an icon in a file somewhere in "mydsl" for "mplayer", i installed a few days ago, but for the moment this player do'nt recognises the devices nor url's.
Thanks to all.

P3 256 ram may get you just by on some other lightweight distro. Vector, maybe Debian with some lightwight window manager, slitaz might be a choice. Antix maybe or something like that I forget the name. Guess you could try a xubuntu or such.

Your system could be used but the video work on any distro really is an issue. Almost hard to do any video work on even new systems.

Before you get too set up with DSL, might try a few of the others out there.

Hang up and live.

Never heard of Swift Linux. I'll look at it.
Hahaha. I did see it before. Can't forget this.
Taylor Swift Linux version. They really need to change that. I am sure that is a trademarked name.

Not sure you have to say what was best. Would be nice to say solved if it really was solved or give points to users.

My screen is different from yours. There may be a marked as solved or best answer above some post.

Anyway I hope I helped.

Hang up and live.

But tell me, what is a trademarked name?
At this moment, i have made a new iso image of my dsl. one that comes from a server here in Belgium. Maybe the quality is better when close to home. I'm going to try it now.
