Solved Installing third party tar.gz in Ubuntu

Specs: Linux x86_64
How do I install Tar.gz programs? I can extract them OK but when it comes to running the install part, nothing happens.
So far I've tried TrueCrypt and Safester with no luck. Can anyone help please?

There should be a README file that tells you how to install the software. You don't need to use any special software, certainly not encryption software.

✔ Best Answer
Agreed. Why do you feel you need encryption software?

Right click and unpack it first, or use the console if that thats easier for you. Then follow iJacks recomendation.

Thanks everone for the advice. rider's link to Q2596 seems to be the answer I'm looking for.
iJack - I did read the README files and followed their instructions but nothing, hence my request for info. (I like Truecrypt's features and encryption facilities, if I said why I need it, that would defeat the object of the whole exercise wouldn't it).

Thanks again to you all.
