The most safe way I'd say is using a virtual machine and save the virtual hard drive file on the external drive.

A very safe way is also to simply run a live cd and save your data on the usb drive.

If you fully understand how to use bios to select a boot device it may be possible to install it to the usb drive. I do have to warn you that many people fail at this at some point. Either they bork their boot loader or they bork the install. This can be done is you know how and read each menu item. One click and you may be in trouble.

Another way is to use sort of a cheat. One uses a live cd and uses a program to put that data on the external drive. See pendrivelinux.com for ideas.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
