i have backup in tape device
HP dat 72GB data cartridge

now how can i copy from this tape drive to disk

It depends what you are trying to do and what version of Linux you are using.

Is the tape in tar or cpio format?

Or do you want to just copy the tape image to disk? Using the dd command can do that. Assuming the tape device is named /dev/st0

dd if=/dev/st0 of=/path/to/new/filename bs=32k

bs is the block size. You might be able to use 64k or 128k. you'll have to experiement.
