First you have to decide if linux has support for your nic. What nic do you have?

Tools are lspci and ifconfig or maybe lsusb if usb nic to start.

In normal installations the thing should work. We may need to know more about your setup.

Booting to the live xubuntu would tell you how it works.

I can't help if you don't answer my questions. What nic do you have?

Look at command lspci see if that is correctly reported.

As we know ubuntu now ships with the kernel support for that card we may have to assume debian doesn't for some reason but we have to prove that.

Use also ifconfig command to see what is going on.

3 ways to get a nic working on linux. One is built in from distro, 2 is get a driver, 3 is you can use windows drivers with ndiswrapper.
