How do I open a zip or jpeg file in Ubuntu 12.10 with Firefo

Specs: Linux x86_64
I am using Firefox 16.0.1. The "open" option is grayed out in the downloads list. I;m pretty sure all these files are photos and were probably sent by Windows users.

You need to install a ZIP program from within the package center.

Also use the update function, to update the already installed packages to the latest version.

Firefox 16.0.1 is quite old version.
The current version is 27.0.1.

You may also already have archive manager/ or the option to open in archive manager. This is the program that came with mine, for the zipped files.

I tried looking at the software center but there were only two downloads and neither one seemed right. I did some more investigating and found that it's possible to change how Firefox handles downloads under "Preferences". The only problem with that is there is no listing for either zip or jpeg files. Ok, find and download a zip file and tell Firefox what to do. I guess that worked for the one i just got, but it evidently does not do anything retroactively. How do i proceed to open zip (or jpeg) files that I downloaded months ago?
