✔ Best Answer
Use a Grub Bootable CD to configure Grub.

btw XP does not recognise USB as an O/S install media.

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

Hi Jolicloud thanks for your response. Unfortunately it doesn't help in this instance.
I am using GRUB 1.98 to access XP. I have tried all the other options
Detect any grub2 cfg file
Detect grub2 installation even if mbr overwritten
Detect loop bootable iso's
Yeah re the usb wotta dumbo. Have to admit to being the author of my own misfortune.
as Ubuntu was installed from within windows I have deleted it (didn't help)
