failed to see the option of installing side b

Specs: Linux i686
I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 in my pc which has window xp but unfortunately failed to see the option of installing side by side in my hdd partition . Please if you can help me.

The "side by side" method usually only works if there is a single partition on the disk. If there is more than one, such as a recovery partition or another operating system, the installer will not usually recommend that option. You'll need to select the manual option and create two partitions by resizing the existing Windows partition. One partition should be a "Linux swap" partition, with a mount point of "swap." The other should be ext3 or ext4 with a mount point of "/". The swap partition should probably be 1 to 2 GB in size; the ext3/ext4 partition can use up whatever space you want to assign to it; I'd recommend at least 6 GB.
