Solved External HDD does often not mount in Linux Mint

Specs: Windows 10/linux mint, Ryzen Prime B350-PLUS
My PC has a dual boot startup, win10-Linux Mint with an external HDD for data storage connected with a USB3 cable. When Linux Mint (LM) is loaded often it turns out that the external HDD has not been mounted. I have to shut down LM completely and restart LM, sometimes the HDD is mounted, sometimes it is not. This is very annoying as it takes a lot of time. My question is can I mount this external HDD from within LM? That would be a much shorter way.
There is another problem in LM. Had installed "simple scan" in LM with which I scanned my documents and saved them on the external HDD. Now activating simple scan the scan interface just disappears for less than a second and disappears from view.
My final question is: can these things be repaired and how do I do that, or is it better to un- and re-install the whole Linux Mint and how do I do that ?
