Does Linux go into standby. If so how?

Specs: Linux i686
Hey I recently got Linux Slax and was wondering if the program goes into standby like windows.
It would be much easier instead of leaving it on all day or having to bring it out of shutdown
every time. So if anyone could tell me if it's possible how its done. I tried right clicking on my desktop, configure, display, then power control but that didn't turn off the hard disks and it wouldn't go from a blank screen

You should just turn it all off. Put every thing you have on a power strip and shut it down. It may save you up to $400 a year in energy. All the wall warts and power supplies take power even when standby or off. It would help protect too against power spikes such as indirect lightning.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

I know it wastes lots of electricity but every time I shut down my computer it loses
everything I saved, it would actually save electricity if I didn't keep it on all day and
I can't keep downloading firefox.Thank you for the reply

If you are still running off the CD maybe it's time to install on the HD.
