Specs: Windows Vista
I have vista working normally. But when i start installing linux (dual boot) it reboots in the middle of the installation. I tried to change the ATA to AHCE bios setting as per the DELL Technical head of india. still the same problem. In the same laptop i have installed and used linux for 3 years.
I am still not understood whether it is a hardware of software compatibilty issue. This problem started recenlty.

Consider a virtual machine instead.

Since the linux fails during install it has to be one of two things. One is some hardware is or has gone bad. Two is the linux you have is bad somehow. Bad drivers, bad cd or what I don't know.

If you had linux on it for three years why did you change drive bios settings?

Thanks. I have downloaded the latest centos 6.0 and installed . now only problem remains is it starts rebooting at random.

Previously the laptop sufferred extra heating and i have replaced with a new power adapter. Then heating problem is over. I suspect during that period some component got bad . But then will it afftect windows os.

I am still experimenting to find the reason. Buying a new laptop is not the solution.

Linux is not Windows so you can't know how the system will react. It could be it will never run linux and run windows perfectly. The parts are used differently.

Look at /var logs in linux.
