Specs: Linux i686
I want to install a piano keyboard and a MIDI card on my Ubuntu 10.10 box. Does anyone have any experience with doting this.

Can it be done on Ubuntu, or do I need to install Ubuntu Studio?

Anything that Studio has you can put in ubuntu.

As to the midi they tend to be supported but you need to really look at other posts and hcl's to decide.

What are you looking to buy or do you have it already?

I'm about to buy, but many Ubuntu posters say they have trouble with MIDI sound under Ubuntu, and others say their sound card has compatibility issues with Ubuntu.

And then I've just learned about Jack, which makes your hardware work at a latency speed suitable for fooling the human and ear.

So, as a newbie I'm hoping to hear from someone who has already gone down the road I am heading down -- don't buy this, try this, that sort of experienced advice.

Any advice is helpful. Thanks.

I think ubuntu studio has the real time kernel on by default. Almost all modern versions of linux have ways to help run but each one is different.

I tend to use search pages. I use the term like you want "midi" or midi interface and use linux.

If I find a company that sells a product that they support in linux then I look to other posts on user reviews or problems. Best if they all say it works great.
