I have an iPod touch 4 which is jail broken & want to upgrade it to the latest ios. I do not intend to jailbreak it. Will it cause any problems if I upgrade to the latest version?

Bear in mind that 6.1.6 is the highest version supported.

Yes I know that 6.1.6 is the version but my concern is whether any of the data will be erased (downloaded games, songs, videos etc.) & will the device function properly after the upgrade?

Thanks.

Obviously, anything that relies on the jailbreak will be lost but official downloads should be OK. Having said that, it would be foolish to upgrade any OS without first backing up anything of importance. In fact you should always have a reliable backup of important stuff as your phone could die tomorrow.

I have already taken the backup of the data so if apps which work on jailbreak are lost, I don't have an issue with that.

I would like to know if I upgrade the ios on my ipod, will it function properly as it was jail broken before? I checked on some sites that after upgrading the ipod stopped working for some people.

It's impossible to say what will happen. Jailbreaking is known to cause problems including bricking devices when upgrading the iOS version.
