Hey, I had a similar problem a few month ago and I couldn't
transfer back my files from my iPod. But I started to pay more
attention to iTunes messages asking me to back up or to restore
any recently added file. In certain point it asked me to put some
missing files back to my computer but I can't remember the exact
circumstances.

Anyway do this with itunes 7.3 and you need to authorize the
new computer in your iTunes account first.

1)
Hold down the SHIFT+CTRL keys on Windows or CMD+OPT on
Macs while connecting your iPod to your computer and until you
actually see your iPod shown in the iTunes list. This will work only
with the entire library and you can't use it to select specific files.

2)
Now you can use the “Transfer Purchases” under the File menu in iTunes

I hope it helps
