I have lost all sound on my iPad. Can not play iTunes. Notifier sounds not working. Screen is getting very dim also

Those symptoms are typical of the iPad battery getting low.
Charge it up with the mains adapter for a few hours then try it again.

Those are not symptoms of a battery going low, iPads will function normally all they way up until the battery goes dead, then it will shut itself off.

I would start with a reset. Press the home button and the power off button at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then let it boot normally.

I doubt you need a new battery, as I said, the symptoms you experienced are not from a bad or low battery, sometimes things just get hung up on a computer and a reboot will solve those problems.

Which iPad do you have? Does the battery seem to last a shorter amount of time than it used to? iPad batteries are not what you would call "user replaceable". That doesn't mean you can't do it, it's just not very easy to do for the average person, and if your iPad is still under warranty, you would void it by opening up your iPad. There are places you can take it if it is out of warranty and they will replace it for a cost.
