I have a Netgear Wireless N Router. We have 7 different devices that have connected via the password to the router. Is there a limit on the number of devices that can connect via the password? We are trying to connect a ipod touch to the router but are getting a message that says: Unable to join the network!

There should be plenty of available addresses left to allow you to configure another end user device to your router. By default the router will probably be using a class C address system which means there is a total of 255 available addresses (2 reserved, one for broadcast and one for the gateway (the router).

There could be a couple of reasons your ipod touch won't connect.

The obvious first, incorrect password. Have you checked the password. It is easy to misread 8's and B's and l's and 1's. Also the mixed use of capitals and lowercase, which is a good thing, can often trip people up.

DHCP configuration, has the number of addresses issued by your router been limited to the number of devices which routinely connect? reduced address range? If so you will need to increase it by 1 to make room for another device.

MAC address filtering, has the router been configured to only allow hardware which it recognises from an allowed list to connect. If MAC filtering has been implemented the iPod touch's MAC address will need to be added to the list.

Finally encryption, I can't see this being an issue as I connect my iPhone to my router using the latest encryption technology.

Remember to note down with pen and paper any settings you change so they can be reverted back to the original settings if needed. Destroy the notes after.

To rule out encryption temporarily configure the routers encryption from WPA-PSK, WPA2 to WPA or even WEP (WEP is much less secure encryption technology than WPA). If you are able to connect using older encryption technology you will need to weigh up if you wish to keep it this way.
