Okay - here's my situation. I need to figure out how to set up my contacts to sync, update and not duplicate - and then be able to de-duplicate contacts.

I have an iPhone, and Google apps - previously was on a PC, and now on a Mac. The problem is that I have several contacts in my iPhone contact list with 4 or 5 duplicated records, and many of them have several of the same numbers in them - and I even have records that I previously deleted that are now showing back up.

I need help - how can I simplify my contacts? I tried soocial, but it didn't work exactly as well as I would've liked.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That explains it step by step. I do NOT however use the gmail mail sync. Instead, I created a separate google mail account. I can update all contacts from anywhere and it's all synced globally. Calendars too!

If you have duplicates, after you sync with gmail, go into your gmail account in the contacts and run the find duplicate. From there you can decide which ones to trash or keep. I think it can merge as well, but I can't remember that.
