iPad mini will not turn off when I close the cover

November 7, 2016 at 15:00:48
Specs: 10.11
My iPad mini will not turn off when I close the cover. However, it is intermittent, it used to turn off, but the last several days it will not turn off.
Obviously the lock/unlock is on, I have tried to turn it off and then back on, still does not work. I have turned the iPad off and back on to no avail.
I use it at night to listen to meditate with Bluetooth ear buds so the bright light does not help. I really thought Apple products would be above all these annoying glitches...

Presumably you don't have it in a case with a switch off magnet in it?

Have you tried a recycle/reboot routine? Press and hold power button and home buttons until the screen goes black, and then wait )still holding the buttons) the Apple logo re-appears. Release both buttons at that moment.

That "may" resolve it?

If that fails - perhaps nip into a local Apple store and chat with one of the duty floor tech types. They may have the answer immediately; if not they may get you a quick session with the Gurus on the bench (usually at the back of the store). Or, if they can't, then book a session with the Guru department and likely they will resolve it..

I have it in a non apple case but as I said it does work sometimes, so that, presumably, would indicate that it is not an issue with the case...?

If the magnet in these auto-sleep style cases shift out of alignment this can cause the issue you are describing.

With the iPad out of the case slowly move the cover around the face of the iPad until you see the screen turn off. Do this a few times to see if the cover is roughly in the same place each time. If the cover appears to be crooked the magnet has probably shifted. Patience, a sharp craft knife and some glue can probably fix the problem for you.

Here's a YouTube clip discussing smart cases and how they work. Hopefully it is helpful.

My iPad2 is in a non Apple fake leather case. It has the shut off magnet, and although it's a decent brand case, it has to be aligned carefully. when closing (sometimes). Follow the suggestion of btk1w1, as likely your case has stretched slightlt and the magnet isn't always in the corrct place. Some cases (and I checked many before I bought the one I have) aren't as well designed nor assembled as others re' magnet placement..
