Should my iPad internet work with 3G? It doesn't seem to at the moment. Would I need a SIM card for it to do this?

3G only applies to mobile phone networks so if you want to access the internet using 3G on your iPad you have to buy a 3G "dongle" from a mobile phone network provider. It plugs into the USB port on your iPad. When you buy a dongle from mobile network provider you pay for a fixed amount of data on it (prepay).

It's more usual however to access the internet on your iPad using your wireless network at home. The 3G dongle is only required when you take your iPad on holiday with you (for example) and you want to access the internet on it away from home, but you could also access the internet through wireless hotspots which are dotted around the country (you don't need a dongle for that).

Thanks for that. I have a laptop that works in this way but I thought iPad was different. I assume the dongle is smaller than that required for a laptop tho?

Incorrect. iPads come in both varieties, with 3G/4G/LTE and WiFi and just WiFi models. It's about $100 more for the one with 3G/4G/LTE access. Yes, you would need a SIM if your iPad supports it.

There is no dongle for an iPad without the cell connection, you would have to use either a phone with hotspot capabilities or purchase a MiFi device.
