Internal iPad speakers not working. Headset works

The internal speakers of the iPad I bought on 01.05.2012 have stopped working. I can use a headset but this is not always convenient. Apple Regent Street want £250 to fix the problem. They seem unable to understand that something bought for £500 should not after one year of careful use require work costing £250.

The jack has a switch in it and sometimes dirt or lint gets in the contact and causes problems. Take the headphone plug and plug it in and unplug it fast 10 to 20 times. This will clean the contacts and can make it work again. If that doesn't work, try resetting your iPad.

I did try resetting the iPad but that did not solve the problem.
I am sure that the headphone socket is where the fault lies. Occasionally it emits clear sound but only briefly.
Am seeking legal advice as to Apple's position under the Sale of Goods Act. When I booked a visit the iPad was one day out of their warranty.
