My wife upgraded to an iphone 5 an wanted to give her iphone 4 to my sister. We went to Rogers and asked them to unlock it, They told us it would be $50 CDN and we said fine. The tech guy gets on the phone with the company and after about 10 minutes the trouble starts. They are telling us it doesn't seem to be a Rogers phone and we need to contact the original carrier. We have confirmed with the original owner that the phone was a Rogers phone and has never been on any other networking because of the unlocking issue, so my guess they just don't want to unlock it because they will lose a customer. Does anyone have a proven method to unlock the above phone. We want to switch to Telus because they have twice the time for $5 less than what Rogers is charging.

I should have mentioned that I have done a lot of google searches but my results either lead me to a different website that what they show, or they start talking about something different than what I am trying to do, or they show doing something on the computer screen but don't show how they got there.

As I understand it, only the carrier who locked it can unlock it; or someone with access to "their" unlock codes...

See if you can trigger a more helpful response by Rogers onlne support:

and this from a google trawl specific to your model iPhone 4 in Canada - using the string/search term:

I haven't used this outfit; but have seen it about for a while.

It does appear Rogers are playing up from what you say...

Fortunately, one of the few benefits of the EEC in which the UK is still embroiled, is that phone service companies "must" allow you to unlock - both at the end of a contract (for free) or during a contract. And if still under contract the contract must run to time, or possibly there may be a buy out option.;

So here is an example of what I mentioned. The link talks about unlocking a Rogers phone, but when you click on the video, it shows how to unlock a phone on AT&T.

Their basic method applies to many providers, and they have to use anyone of themfor a demo.

What is usually required is a series of numbers etc. - bit like a passcode or key. Phone companies usually provide that number sequence, and presumably there are other ways acquire it too; or one similar.

in the UK the unlock shops do charge for doing it; and invariably they are using an online resource for the number sequence...

I guess cellunlocker are milking the market in Canada, knowing the unloch scene is problematic, due to apparent obstruction by the service providers?

Have checked more using a google trawl similar to mine; and have you considered going back to Rogers (maybe write the CEO as that often gets results when lower down the pay scale is being "difficult")?

We didn't want to go back to Rogers because they give half the minutes for $5 more per month and of course they know they got us unless we can get the phone unlocked. I might just pay the $120 as I would like my sister to get away from her old flip phone that isn't any good for today's technology.

You have nothing to lose by writing - send by signed for delivery - to the CEO or whatever at Rogers. Suggest that their apparent intransigence, and claims that phone is not locked to Rogers is unacceptable... Perhaps contact your local Chamber of Commerece, and/or the local press too, and acquaint them with the situation; even your local tv station?

In your letter Rogers remind them that they used to have a good name for customer service and satisfaction; but has that now gone? Also that you are highly unlikely to recommend them in the future, based on your current dispute and respones from Rogers reps.

Surprising sometimes what going to the top can do. Also even Rogers won't want adverse publicity... But be absolutely sure the phone has only ever been locked to (was provided by) Rogers.

Do have any bills, or paperwork/emails pertaining to this phone and its associated Rogers account. Also double check the sim; and don't lose or surrender it to anyone - especially Rogers.

Rogers always valued its reputation in the past; certainly prior to the advent of internet and cell phone services.

The ONLY company that can unlock your phone is the phone company that it's tied to, in this case, it's Rogers.

Companies that claim to unlock you phones such as are scam artists. They might be able to unlock it temporarily but as soon as you do a reset or iOS upgrade, it will go back to being locked to the original carrier.

Well then I guess I am hooped. I can't find anything on Rogers site to contact the President. I went to another Rogers store and the guy there suggested I do it my myself. He gave me some BS about them charging more than other places, and that there is currently a backlog on iphones.

I tried using pangu 1.2.1 to do a jailbreak of IOS 7.1.x but its not working either. The program starts, I have my phone connected, but the black jailbreak button does nothing when I click it.

Chamber of Comerce might have that info., or at least some means of contacting hime/her.

Failing which perhaps time to contact local media - the printed press and broadcast stations (those of the latter not controlled by Rogers)?

Well it is no longer required. What a different going through one channel makes than another. Last night I found that on Rogers website you can start a online chat with tech support. Well I was blown away. Not only did they make me feel like I was a valued customer, they actually helped me get the phone unlocked, even though it took 2 chats and a complete reset of the phone. I placed my telus sim card in the iphone and viola, it works.

If only the stores treated us like a customer instead of a burden.

The only funny thing is Rogers would not unlock the phone for me, It had to be done through a current customer. My sister is one so we opened up a new chat under her name, even though I was doing all the typing. Go figure.

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.
