How do you update iOS on older iPad

Specs: Mc 769ll
I do not have a "software update" under general - settings and can't figure out how to update iOS for a new app "abc mouse" that my daughter wants to use

Which model iPad do you have?

Updates (if available) for apps are usually indicated at bottom of iTunes page. The actual iOS updates are indicated on the Settings icon.

I would seriously avoid upgrading to any version of iOS-8 due the numerous problem regularly reported here and elsewhere.

I was under the impression that Apple discontinued any earlier versions of iOS after a new one arrived. However... a quick google trawl/search for it brought this (which means my understanding was a little "orf..."):

I would first back up "all" my personal stuff that's on the iPAd as is on whichever computer you use; sync it etc. and ensure you have that info in a couple of places - just in-case...
