Im trying to upgrade the iOS to the latest version or a newer version so I can download apps onto my iPad
See the following: "As iOS 11 heralds a 64-bit only software era, the iPhone 5, 5c and iPad (fourth-generation) will be left behind. Here’s the full list of compatible devices:
- iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, iPad (fifth-generation), iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2
- iPod touch (sixth-generation)"
Ensure you have at least 60% battery, better yet, plug it into the wall
Go to 'General' > 'Software update'
and if there is an update available click on 'Download and install'
You will need to enter you passcode at this point
Once you have done that, you will see the progress of download
once the update is downloaded it will install.If you are unable to do this over the air (ie: via wifi or mobile data)
Or you do not have enough space available on the device for the update to downloadConnect it to iTunes and let it update the iPad for you.
and ensure the iPad charger is attached and "on"... This applies to all Apple portable devices, laptops included; as if the power drops (battery discharges fully) updates/upgrades can fail.
Note that not all iPads can be upgraded to the latest iOS.
True the sfttware doesn't appear on a given i-devce as an update option then it's not available for it.
