I want to get a sim card from my wireless provider. It will have my plan info on it, etc. Once I get the card, do I just put it in the phone and that's it? I'm getting confused because I will also be activating the phone for the first time. Can you activate both the phone and the sim card at the same time or am I not thinking about this right. Thanks.

Yes put the SIM card in and then activate the phone.

Any wait would be at the telco end as sometimes the SIM card can take a few hours to activate. Once the SIM card is recognized by the telco the phones activation process should be fairly straight forward.

You can also activate an iPhone without a SIM by connecting it to iTunes during the activation process. This way might be easier as any problems will be easier to pin point.

Also if you already have an active SIM you can use that to go through the activation process. The phone doesn't have to be used with the SIM that unlocks it. This is providing the phone isn't locked to a particular telco.
