Editing and Cursor Control

I am trying to understand how to effectively edit and cut/paste text.

1. is there a "forward" delete or only a backspace?
2. Tapping once brings up the magnifying glass but the cursor doesn't always appear. What am I doing wrong?
3. I understand that double tapping highlights a word with preceding and trailing blue dots. At times this highlight can be enlarged by dragging the dots. Often, however, it just disappears when dragging is attempted. What's the secret?
4. Double tapping sometimes highlights more than one word. How is the scope controlled?
5, Sometimes a rectangular magnifying glass appears rather than the usual round one. What does this mean?

Perhaps what he actually did was double tap and drag on the second tap.

I find it's quite handy!

Triple tapping is supposed to select a paragraph. Though I don't know exactly what a paragraph means sometimes. Maybe when you think you are double tapping, the computer thinks you are triple tapping sometimes.

I haven't ever experienced that work in iOS. It does work in Mac OS though.

I don't have my iPad in front of me ATM, but it seems a double-tap-hold on a single word should select just that word.

Oops. Yes, I was thinking about Mac OS X.

What other reason could there be?
