Delete Text Message Phone Numbers

Specs: iOS6 version, N/A
A friend brought this to my attention. She has an iPhone 4 something. Here are the steps she's following:

New Text Message by pressing the icon
Clicking on the + sign, will of course bring up her Current Contacts.
However, the weird things is, if she types a + sign, or a - sign, or a . etc, in the To line, she sees not only the Contacts she's texted, but ALL numbers she's texted. Even after deleting all text messages from her Message History these numbers (not associated with any contact) still show up. She does not want these numbers to show up, and is desperate to delete them. (Personal reasons.)

I checked my iPhone 5, and I have the same thing happen. I've Googled the problem, and found a few things, mostly that this can't be fixed. I did find this, which is too much of a pain for her, and me, to be honest.

Most sites suggest that upgrading to iOS7 when it's released will fix the problem.

Anyone have any ideas on how to remove these numbers without too many complicated steps before the update comes out? I'm more curious now than anything.

Thanks much as always for any assistance.

Thanks for that, Mike. Tried that also, and it didn't work. The old entries are still showing.

Mmm..seems Apple is starting to emulate M$ with some of its software...? Buggy etc. requiring a complete update of the OS too, to reolve it. And from I have noted elsewhere, some have had serious problems, disastrous results when going over to iOS7 - at least on iPads...
