You might just as well ask the question, why have a Primary Master and a Secondary Master as well as a Primary slave and a Secondary slave. They are just methods of adding extra hard drives to a computer. Why add extra hard drive? Well people need more storage space as well as CD/DVD drives.

You use a slave drive just like any other drive. It is partitioned and formatted and allocated a drive letter and away you go.

Bear in mind that the concept of a Master and Slave drive only exits with PATA drives. With SATA it is just drive 1, Drive 2 , ets.
