XPS14z Cd Drive Noise

September 6, 2012 at 21:01:39
Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, Core I7-2640M/8 Gb Ram
Once laptop is switched on SLOT LOADING CD Drive makes this 3 to 4 seconds noise which Dell told me is normal for all slot loading drives. Once on desk top the same noise keeps on coming randomly. Sometimes you play a video stored on your hard drive same noise from CD Drive comes. Some times you open IE and same noise comes. Over all functioning of CD Drive is fine but this noise is there. Dell tech people have no idea what this is. One Tech guy came and changed the CD Drive but noise still the same. Please if anyone can help ?

Are you very sure the noise is actually coming from the CD drive?
It may be coming from the hard drive, in which case you should test it with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software for DOS which runs from a bootable CD. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm...

Back up your data before testing the drive (you should already have it backed up anyway whether you are testing the drive or not).

Yes, 100% CD Drive noise. It sounds like CD Drive is loading something when there is nothing in the drive. CD Drive tries to load non existent disc even if you play a video from harddrive.

Your noise is too bad mate, mine is not this loud but annoying becase even if you dont have a disc in the drive it keeps on trying to load randomly for no reason. My noise is the same when you insert a disc in the drive.

Hi,

I would suggest you to follow the below mentioned steps in the order specified, which could fix the issue:
• Determine when the noise occurs in the CD Drive.
• Test the CD Drive with a Known-Good Media (Try multiple types of disc).
• If possible try reseating Optical drive and check if the noise problem stops. For removing the Optical Drive you can refer to the URL mentioned: http://support.dell.com/support/edo...
• If the issue still occurs, download and install the Latest Optical Drive Firmware and BIOS from support site. For that click on the URL mentioned: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...
• If the noise is abnormal, then your computer’s CD Drive might have gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Kindly let me know for further clarifications.

Thanks & Regards

No specific time when the noise occurs. Mostly when a video file is opened from the harddrive.
Reseating is already done by dell tech guy who came over and replaced the old cd drive.
Can u please confirm if possible the name of the firmware / file which you ask me to download. Appreciate your help.
