It doesn't matter what OS is used to download the file - 32-bit, 64-bit, Windows, Linux, etc. Once you have the file, copy it to a USB thumb-drive or a CD. Insert the CD or thumb-drive in the XP machine, locate the file, right click on it & select Run as Administrator.

"Windows XP-KB93629-SP3-x86.exe"
This is the correct number.
KB936929

What size is your file?

SP3 is over 300MB. The original was 316MB but the final version is closer to 350MB.

Update your drivers, especially motherboard, NIC, etc.
If your machine was part of a corporate/server network, you may not be able to really do anything unless you wipe the drive (delete partitions) and reinstall XP on a new partition.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi David,

your PC may run slow for a while or continuously.

You need to check what is happening regarding updates.

I think there are over two hundred since SP3 and if now being installed automatically can take much time hogging resources. Also possibly may never complete due to sticking on one.
..
To overcome, I ran updating manually, selecting a fewer number of updates for each run.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

I agree, 10 at a time is a good number but if possible, less than 20 at a time for sure.
