Won't boot, resets

Compaq hp / Evo d51s sff

Specs: Windows XP Pro, 1 gb/256 m
Started with RAM not being recognized when I tried to add 1 gb to 256 mb. Suggested wrong RAM so reordered 2700 instead of 3300 and 2X512 mb sticks. Now won't boot with any of the RAM in it. Tried 1.25 gb, 1 gb (2x512), 1 gb stick, and 256 alone and nothing. Tried to boot then resets and tries again. I hear 1 short and 2 long beeps but it won't boot up. HELP!?!?!

I couldn't find the exact beep code for that model. It may be in the manual.

But it's either ram or video. If you have a video card card instead of on-board video, try another card. Make sure the card you're using is firmly inserted in the slot.

Did you have the system unplugged when you were inside the case or was it just off? The power supply still provides a small charge to the motherboard when off and that can be enough to ruin something when you're messing with the PC 'innards.

Now that's what I call a sticky situation

It was unplugged, and video is part of the motherboard chipset.. I pulled old RAM and put in 2x512 mb sticks when it happened. Tried re-inserting original 256 and same thing. Possible code is power supply overload so I disconnected each peripheral to check and it was a no-go. Frustrating!!

You might try putting in a regular video card just to see if you get a posting screen with it.

Otherwise either all your ram is bad or the motherboard is bad.
