Windows wont load and my files arent backed

Specs: Windows XP
When i switch on my laptop it starts to load windows but then keeps going around in a circle without loading. I have a windows boot disk so can re install windows but i will lose all my files. I cannot run Safe mode. It just fills the screen with various file paths, beginning with "partition"

I bought an external hard drive thinking i could copy files to it in DOS but I have 2 problems.
1) Dos doesnt recognise my WD elements hard drive
2) Even if it did i only sem to have acces to some of my hardrive. I think it may be partitioned.

Any ideas how I can get either windows to work, or for dos to recognise my hardive?

Download a Linux rescue disk like Knoppix, to save your files.

"Dos doesnt recognise my WD elements hard drive"
probably the ntfs file system is what it doesn't recognize.

if you can download this, & create a bootable cd,

http://distrowatch.com/index.php?di...

boot from the cd, access you files and copy and paste to the external drive or burn to a cd.

"I think it may be partitioned."
might be a recovery partition, don't delete it or mess with it.

Its easy, download the iso file

http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/...

Then download deepburner free http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download

Then follow the wizard to burn an iso disk, it will then be bootable.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
