windows vista wont startup all the way

Specs: windows vista, 4GB ram
my notebook starts up like normal all the way tell it gets to the screen where you see your mouse. then nothing. just see a mouse and a black screen. i tried safe mode, restore point, windows diagnos. thats the extent towhat i know to do.
oh yeah before one time it said somethin bout ataport software in the blue screen when i started it up

Hold down the Windows Key and press R. You will get a run dialog. Type "Explore". This will restore your desktop temporarily. Once you desk top is back run a Virus scan.
