Windows Vista Sound with with Headphones

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium, 2 gb
My old headphones worked fine up until a couple of months ago but were broken after 12 years of use. I plugged in a headset with a mic and my friend could hear me but i could not hear her on comp. Today I bought new Sony headphones and I can hear a CD when I play it and messenger alerts etc., but when I try to play a video on youtube there is no sound. My Vista system came with Realtek High Definition Audio. In the control panel under sounds and the Realtek Sound icon, it should a green tick by the speakers but the headphones icon is greyed out with a red arrow pointing downwards and says "Realtek HD Audio 2nd Output2 Not Plugged In. I've tried plugging the headphone mini socket into all 6 inputs but still no sound from the web. Does anyone know how to fix this? and if not, is there some software I can download to my Vista computer to get sounds from the net?
Many thanks in anticipation for your assistance.

Realtek HD sound has programmable jacks. So even though you are using the same jack it may not be programmed for headphones.

Did you migrate from XP to Vista? If you can find motherboard sound drivers for Vista at the manufacturers site then download and install them.
