Windows vista does not work at all

Specs: Windows Vista
My computer was working fine yesterday and when I started it today I got a message saying Windows had detected a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage. It then takes me to a screen that says start system recovery or start windows. System recovery does not work but it does give me some other options that also do not work. They are System restore, restore from image, and command prompt which I don't even know what to type in there. I've tried pressing F8 to start from last known good configuration and that just takes me right back to the screen that says windows had detected a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage. I've tried all the safe mode options and the same thing happens. I do not have a recovery cd or a windows cd. Is there anything else I can try?

I'd try to boot from the system disk and run repair.
