Windows 7 asks me to format my passport hard drive

Specs: Windows XP, quad pentium
Just recently, if I plug in a USB flash drive or a passport 320 Gb hard drive, windows says I must format it before using it.

I tried the passport on my XP machine & it would not recognise it, so I ran hardware manager & it showed the drive listed but volumes showed no space.

I went back to file explorer & now it showed the drive so I right clicked on properties & clicked on the default settings, and now it appears to be working normally & if I put it back in the Win7 machine it is also working normally

I can't quite remember where I change the default settings, because if it does not show on file explorer, you can click on properties, so maybe it was under hardware manager.

Anyway, main things is it appears normal now. Before the drive ran for a few seconds then stopped & repeated continuously.

What I would do in these circumstances is copy any files on the drive that you want to keep onto a hard dsik while you can, format the drive and copy the files back again. A lenthy process on 320Gbs.

There could have been some minor fault with the file system that was corrected but could very well re-emerge. Formatting will ensure the file system is correct and highlight any possible errors in the drive.
