Win ME-HUAWEI Mobile Broadband Instl Problem

September 22, 2009 at 10:18:11
Specs: Windows Vista
This question is in relation to Windows ME.

I have a Windows ME system PC which I recently brought out of retirement for my son to use. The computer was used a few years ago on a 'broadband' cable connection.

I have a 2009 Huawei 'Mobile Broadband', "Dongle" which I gave him to access the WWW. On installation I received an error message indicating you require drivers & or service pack update. Does anyone know where I can download an update for to enable me to install this dongle to the Wim ME system (via my Vista Prem system). Any info who be appreciated.

Many thanks, Iachsi

This it?

If not, can you give more information? I suspect it doesn't support Windows 9x (95, 98, 98se, Me).

There is a whole range of "Huawei Mobile Broadband" products
http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/...

Which one do you have?

I looked at the specs of some of them - the minimum operating system they can be used in is 2000. I suspect that applies to all of them

In any case, in most cases for these types of things, you install software for the device BEFORE you first plug it in.
........

What are you using to connect to the internet with for the Vista computer? Is it a laptop or a desktop computer?
Depending on circumstances, you may be able to connect both computers to a local network, e.g. , via a router, network cable or wirelessly, and then he can share using your internet connection.

Thank for your prompt response, it's a 180G. Which has installation software incorporated in the USB stick. There was no separate software install package!

I have a mobile wireless device that I primarily use for my work on my Vista sys & have considered a router but am not sure if Win ME system would accept the USB link to my n/w provider. If you mentioned there should be no compatibility problems that would cheer me up :)!

AFAIK all USB Mobile Internet Adaptors require Windows NT based O/S aka 2000 / XP / Vista.

I have never found MS-DOS based O/S aka W9x|Me Drivers/Software.

The solution is a 3G Wireless Router. I live in UK but they are available in other countries:

"I have a mobile wireless device that I primarily use for my work on my Vista sys & have considered a router but am not sure if Win ME system would accept the USB link to my n/w provider"

The Win ME system only needs to connect to the internet - it doesn't matter how it does it. When your Vista system and the ME system are on the same local network, they can share an internet connection, as long as the Vista system is running at the time and has the mobile wireless device connected to the internet.
.......

If that's inconvenient, then perhaps your mobile wireless internet provider has this option - a portable internet modem.
It useless the same technology - it connects to local wireless phone towers - and you may be able to add it onto your wireless package plan for a small addtional fee.
It can connect wirelessly to any computer within range that has a wireless network adapter.

All you would need for the ME computer is a wireless G desktop adapter that supports ME - many of them do.
