There are a few things missing from this list; cooling fan, case, case fan, power supply, monitor, and Operating System, audio, etc.

I think she can buy a good desktop or laptop for less than what it would cost to build one.

Then why are you spending $400 for a CPU & motherboard? And why the AM3+ platform? Have a look at the following article. I'm not recommending the board, but I'd like you to see the comments - "now nearly geriatric", "has had quite a lifespan", "AM3+ is a dead end in terms of socket infrastructure"

If you insist on an AM3+, you might wanna consider a quad instead of a hex-core & either a cheaper FX990 (or 970) board. Invest some of the savings in faster RAM (at least DDR3-1866).
